Dark field microscopy is used to enhance the contrast in unstained and transparant specimens. A special sized disc prevents unscattered light to enter the objectives and produces the almost black background. Only scattered light from the tissues or cells of the specimens will be seen as bright objects against the dark background. Despite of the simplicity of the systemn the quality of the images are quite impressive. Because of the low light levels, the microscopes are equipped with strong illumination systems
