Fluorescent illuminations

A fluorescent lamp is filled with mercury vapor and a noble gas and the inner surface is coated with a fluorescent coating. This coating will emit visible light when short wave UV light - generated by the gas-discharge exited mercury atoms - hit the coating. The fluorescent lamp produces more light than an incandescent lamp. Also heat production is much lower
