Choosing the right illumination is essential with stereo microscopy and is mostly determined by the transparency of the object

With non transparent objects, an incident or epi-illumination will be used. An incident illumination can be coaxial or under a certain angle. With transparent or partial transparent objects, a transmitted or diascopic illumination can be used. Sometimes, using both incident and transmitted illumination at the same time can give better results in order to reveal some details
